Description

This Ridiculously Easy Homemade Bagels recipe combines simple ingredients like flour, baking powder, sea salt, and Greek yogurt to create soft, chewy bagels without the need for boiling. Perfect for a quick and straightforward baking project, these bagels are brushed with egg wash and optionally topped with seeds or cheese before baking to golden perfection.

Ingredients

Bagels:

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour (bread flour also okay)
  • 4 teaspoons baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon sea salt
  • 1 ½ cups Greek yogurt

Egg Wash:

  • Egg white from one egg
  • 1 teaspoon water

Toppings (optional):

  • Sesame seeds
  • Poppy seeds
  • Flax seeds
  • Grated cheese

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper to prepare for baking.
  2. Prepare Egg Wash: In a small bowl, combine the egg white and 1 teaspoon of water. Beat with a fork to loosen the egg white, then set aside for brushing later.
  3. Mix Dry Ingredients: In a mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and sea salt until evenly combined.
  4. Add Yogurt and Combine: Add the Greek yogurt to the dry ingredients and mix using a fork or pastry cutter thoroughly until the mixture forms a rough dough.
  5. Form Dough Ball: Using your hands, gather the dough into a ball. If the dough feels too dry, add 1 teaspoon of water and mix again until it comes together smoothly.
  6. Knead Dough: On a lightly floured surface, knead the dough about 10 times until it is smooth and elastic. Then flatten slightly into a ball.
  7. Divide Dough: Cut the dough into 8 equal pieces for 4-inch bagels.
  8. Shape Bagels: Roll each piece into a log, then shape into a bagel by overlapping and squeezing the ends together firmly to form a ring.
  9. Place on Baking Sheet: Arrange the shaped bagels on the parchment-lined baking sheet, spacing them evenly.
  10. Apply Egg Wash: Brush each bagel thoroughly with the prepared egg wash, including all edges and inside the ring.
  11. Add Toppings: Sprinkle your choice of toppings such as sesame seeds, poppy seeds, flax seeds, or grated cheese over the bagels if desired.
  12. Bake: Bake the bagels on an upper rack in the preheated oven for 25 minutes, until golden and cooked through.
  13. Cool: Transfer the bagels to a cooling rack and let them cool for at least 15 minutes, preferably longer before slicing.
  14. Store: Store bagels in a sealed bag at room temperature for 1–2 days. They also toast well if eaten later.

Notes

  • Full-fat, low-fat, or non-fat Greek yogurt can be used with this recipe.
  • If using regular yogurt instead of Greek yogurt, start with 1 cup and gradually add more to achieve proper dough consistency as regular yogurt is thinner.
  • Be mindful that measuring flour by volume can vary depending on packing; adjust flour amount if dough is sticky or dry.
  • If dough is too sticky, add flour a little at a time until manageable.
  • If dough is too dry and won’t stick, add more yogurt a tablespoon at a time until it forms correctly.
  • This recipe yields eight 4-inch bagels; for larger bagels, divide dough into 4 or 6 pieces.
  • Be sure to brush egg wash on all visible sides, including the inside edges of bagels, for even browning.
  • Bagels keep well in a sealed bag for a couple of days and toast up nicely for a fresh taste.
