Description

Puppy Chow Bars are a delightful, no-bake treat combining crunchy Chex cereal with a rich, chocolatey peanut butter and marshmallow mixture. Coated in powdered sugar for a sweet finish, these bars are perfect for a fun snack or dessert that’s easy to prepare and loved by all ages.

Ingredients

Dry Ingredients

  • 7 cups (189g) Chex cereal
  • 10 oz (283g) mini marshmallows (about 1 bag)
  • 1 cup (113g) powdered sugar, or more as needed

Wet Ingredients

  • 4 Tbsp (57g) unsalted butter (1/2 stick)
  • 2 cups (340g) semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1 cup (270g) creamy peanut butter

Instructions

  1. Prepare Cereal: Measure out 7 cups of Chex cereal in a large mixing bowl and set aside to keep the cereal ready for coating.
  2. Melt Chocolate and Butter: In a medium microwave-safe bowl, combine the chocolate chips and unsalted butter. Microwave at 50% power in 1-minute intervals, stirring between each, until fully melted and smooth.
  3. Add Peanut Butter: Stir in the creamy peanut butter to the melted chocolate and butter mixture. Microwave again on 50% power in 1-minute intervals, stirring until the mixture is combined and silky.
  4. Incorporate Marshmallows: Add the mini marshmallows to the chocolate and peanut butter blend. Microwave at 50% power in 1-minute intervals, stirring thoroughly each time until the marshmallows become puffy and start melting into the mixture. The mixture will thicken substantially but continue stirring with a spatula.
  5. Coat the Cereal: Pour the thick chocolate-peanut-mallow mixture over the prepared Chex cereal. Use a spatula—and some elbow grease—or your hands to thoroughly coat all the cereal pieces evenly.
  6. Press into Pan: Transfer the coated cereal mixture into a 9×13 inch baking pan. Press firmly with your hands to compact the mixture evenly into the pan.
  7. Cool the Bars: Allow the bars to cool completely. For faster setting, place the pan in the refrigerator until firm.
  8. Coat with Powdered Sugar: Once cooled, cut the bars into squares. Place 1 cup of powdered sugar in a ziplock bag, add one bar at a time, seal the bag, and shake to coat the bar in powdered sugar evenly. Repeat for all bars.
  9. Serve: Arrange the coated bars on a serving tray and enjoy!

Notes

  • Microwaving at 50% power helps prevent scorching the chocolate and marshmallows by gently melting them.
  • Using your hands to mix and press the bars is effective because the mixture becomes very thick and difficult to stir.
  • Storing the bars in the refrigerator helps them set faster and maintain their shape.
  • Adjust powdered sugar quantity based on your preferred sweetness and coating thickness.
  • For an extra touch, you can add chopped nuts or sprinkles before pressing the bars.
