Description

Matcha Puppy Chow is a deliciously unique twist on the classic snack mix, combining the creamy sweetness of white chocolate with vibrant, earthy matcha powder. This treat features crispy rice cereal coated in a smooth matcha white chocolate blend, then dusted with a matcha-infused powdered sugar coating for an irresistible snack that’s perfect for any occasion.

Ingredients

Matcha Puppy Chow

  • 1 cup (170 g) couverture white chocolate chips
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • 4 ½ teaspoon (10 g) matcha powder
  • 4 cups Chex rice cereal

Powdered Sugar Dusting

  • 1 cup (210 g) powdered sugar
  • 2 teaspoons matcha powder

Instructions

  1. Melt the white chocolate: Using a double boiler method, place the white chocolate chips and salt in a heatproof bowl. Position the bowl over a pot of simmering water making sure the bowl doesn’t touch the water. Stir gently and continuously on low heat until the chocolate is completely melted and smooth.
  2. Sift in the matcha powder: Using a fine-mesh sieve, sift the matcha powder into the melted white chocolate to remove any clumps. Mix thoroughly with a spatula until the chocolate mixture is smooth and uniformly green.
  3. Mix the melted matcha chocolate with the cereal: Place the Chex rice cereal in a large bowl. Pour the melted matcha white chocolate over the cereal in 3 batches. Gently fold the mixture using a rubber spatula to ensure even coating without breaking the cereal. Set aside to cool to room temperature.
  4. Whisk together the powdered sugar and matcha powder: In a separate bowl, combine the powdered sugar and matcha powder. Whisk until the mixture is fully integrated and free of lumps.
  5. Toss the coated cereal with the powdered sugar mix: Once the coated cereal has cooled to room temperature, transfer it along with the powdered sugar matcha mix into a large gallon-sized ziplock bag. Seal and shake vigorously until every piece of cereal is coated evenly. Add extra powdered sugar mixture if necessary to prevent clumping.
  6. Chill and serve: Spread the coated puppy chow onto a parchment-lined cookie sheet and refrigerate uncovered for 15 to 30 minutes, or until the coating has dried. Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator to maintain freshness.

Notes

  • Use a trusted Matcha powder: Quality affects flavor massively. High-grade matcha powders like Matchabar, Junbi, or Matcha Bloom deliver the best taste and color.
  • Use Callebaut White Chocolate melting chips: Known for their creamy richness and smooth melting properties, Callebaut chips ensure a perfect coating and taste.
  • Even coating is key: Ample powdered sugar coating prevents the cereal from clumping and melting together.
  • Storage instructions: Keep in an airtight container either at room temperature (if cool) or refrigerated. This snack stays fresh for up to one week.
