Description

This Homemade Nutella Recipe offers a delicious, creamy chocolate-hazelnut spread made from scratch using roasted hazelnuts, cocoa powder, sweetener, and vanilla. With a smooth, rich texture similar to store-bought Nutella, this recipe is a healthier and customizable alternative perfect for spreading on toast, baking, or enjoying by the spoonful.

Ingredients

Nutella Spread

  • 2 cups hazelnuts (240g)
  • 1/4 tsp pure vanilla extract
  • 1/4 cup cocoa powder
  • 1/3 cup sweetener of choice (such as sugar, maple syrup, honey, or a sugar substitute)
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup milk of choice or 2 tbsp oil (optional, for creamier texture)

Instructions

  1. Roast the Hazelnuts: Preheat the oven to 400°F (204°C). Spread the hazelnuts evenly on a baking sheet and roast for 6-8 minutes or until they start to brown and become fragrant. This step enhances the nutty flavor and aids in removing skins.
  2. Remove the Skins: After roasting, place the hazelnuts in a clean kitchen towel or paper towel and rub them vigorously to remove the skins. It’s fine if some skins remain; they won’t affect the final flavor significantly.
  3. Blend into Hazelnut Butter: Transfer the peeled hazelnuts to a high-powered blender or food processor and blend until they turn into a smooth, creamy butter. This process can take up to 20 minutes in a food processor, so be patient and scrape down the sides as needed.
  4. Add Remaining Ingredients: Add the cocoa powder, sweetener, vanilla extract, and salt to the hazelnut butter. Continue blending for several minutes until the mixture is smooth and evenly combined, with a consistency similar to commercial Nutella.
  5. Adjust Consistency (Optional): If desired, add up to 1/2 cup of milk of choice or 2 tablespoons of oil to make the spread creamier and blend thoroughly until fully incorporated.
  6. Store: Transfer the homemade Nutella to an airtight container and store it in the refrigerator. It should keep well for up to two weeks.

Notes

  • Roasting hazelnuts is essential to develop flavor and ease skin removal.
  • You can use any sweetener you prefer, including natural sweeteners or sugar substitutes.
  • Adding milk or oil is optional but helps achieve a creamier texture similar to store-bought Nutella.
  • Use a high-powered blender or food processor to ensure a smooth and creamy spread.
  • Store homemade Nutella in the refrigerator to maintain freshness; bring to room temperature before serving if it firms up.
