Delicious and comforting Hamburger Steaks in a rich, creamy dill sauce. These juicy beef patties are pan-seared and simmered in a flavorful sauce made with onions, garlic, and fresh dill, perfect for a hearty family dinner.
Ingredients
For the Hamburger Steaks
- 1.3 pounds ground beef
- 4 tbsp breadcrumbs
- 1 yellow onion (grated)
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 tsp black pepper
- 2 tbsp heavy cream
- 1 egg
For Cooking and Sauce
- 1 tbsp olive oil
- 1 tbsp unsalted butter
- 1 yellow onion (diced)
- 2 garlic cloves (minced)
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 tsp black pepper
- 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
- ½ cup low sodium chicken broth
- 1 cup heavy cream
- 2 tbsp chopped dill (plus extra for serving)
Instructions
- Prepping the mixture: Grate one yellow onion into a large bowl. Add ground beef, breadcrumbs, salt, black pepper, heavy cream, and egg. Mix together by hand until just combined.
- Shaping patties: Divide the beef mixture into 4 equal portions. Form each into a ball and then press down with your palm or a spatula to a thickness of about ¾ inch (2 cm). Set aside for cooking.
- Chopping aromatics: Finely dice the second yellow onion, mince the garlic cloves, and chop the fresh dill. Keep these ingredients ready for the sauce.
- Searing the steaks: Heat olive oil and unsalted butter in a large nonstick skillet over medium heat. Add the hamburger steaks and cook for 4-5 minutes on each side until a nice brown crust forms. Transfer the steaks to a clean plate and set aside.
- Making the sauce base: In the same skillet, reduce heat to low and add the diced onion and minced garlic. Cook until fragrant, about 2 minutes. Add salt, pepper, and all-purpose flour; stir well to incorporate and cook briefly.
- Deglazing and simmering: Pour in the low sodium chicken broth while scraping up any browned bits from the skillet bottom with a wooden spoon. Let it simmer gently for 2 minutes to thicken slightly.
- Finishing the sauce: Add the heavy cream and chopped dill to the skillet. Bring the sauce to a boil, then reduce heat to simmer for 1-2 minutes until it thickens.
- Returning the steaks: Place the cooked hamburger steaks back into the skillet with the creamy dill sauce. Simmer gently for 5-6 minutes until the steaks are heated through and cooked fully in the center.
- Serving: Finish with extra chopped dill and freshly ground black pepper. Serve the hamburger steaks hot topped with the creamy dill sauce.
Notes
- Use low sodium chicken broth to control the salt content in the sauce.
- You can substitute beef with ground turkey or pork if desired, adjusting cooking time accordingly.
- If you prefer a thicker sauce, let it simmer a little longer while stirring frequently.
- The recipe yields 4 servings, perfect for a family meal or dinner gathering.
- Serve with mashed potatoes, rice, or buttered noodles to complement the creamy sauce.
