Description
This Elephant Ears recipe offers a classic, crispy fried dough treat coated with cinnamon sugar. Perfect for a sweet snack or dessert, these golden puffed circles are easy to make with simple ingredients and fried to perfection for a crispy outside and tender inside.
Ingredients
Dough
- 2 cups Flour
- ½ tsp Salt
- ½ tsp Baking Powder
- 1 cup warm water
Frying and Topping
- Oil for Frying (about 3 inches deep)
- 2 Tbsp Sugar
- 2 tsp Cinnamon
Instructions
- Mix dry ingredients. In a bowl, combine 2 cups of flour, ½ teaspoon of salt, and ½ teaspoon of baking powder thoroughly to prepare the dough base.
- Add water. Slowly stir in 1 cup of warm water into the dry mix until a dough forms. Use as much water as needed to achieve a soft but workable dough consistency.
- Rest the dough. Allow the dough to rest for 5 minutes, which helps relax the gluten for easier rolling.
- Divide and roll. Cut the dough into 6 equal pieces, then roll each piece into a circle about ½-inch thick to form the elephant ears shapes.
- Heat oil. Pour about 3 inches of oil into a deep pot and heat it until it reaches frying temperature, suitable for deep frying.
- Fry the dough. Carefully fry each dough circle in the hot oil until golden brown and puffed up, then flip to cook the other side until evenly golden and cooked through.
- Drain excess oil. Remove the fried dough and transfer it onto paper towel-lined plates to absorb excess oil for a crisp finish.
- Prepare cinnamon sugar. In a small bowl, mix 2 tablespoons sugar with 2 teaspoons cinnamon until well combined.
- Coat and serve. Sprinkle the warm fried dough generously with the cinnamon sugar mixture and serve immediately for the best taste and texture.
Notes
- Make sure the oil is hot enough before frying to prevent oily dough and achieve crispiness.
- Do not overcrowd the pot while frying; cook in batches for best results.
- You can adjust the cinnamon sugar amount to suit your taste preferences.
- Serve elephant ears fresh and warm as they are best enjoyed immediately after frying.
