Description

These Easy French Dip Sliders are a delicious and convenient twist on the classic sandwich, featuring tender roast beef, melted provolone cheese, caramelized onions, and a savory onion soup butter topping. Baked to perfection and served with flavorful au jus for dipping, these sliders are perfect for game day, parties, or a satisfying meal any time.

Ingredients

For the Sliders

  • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 medium onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 teaspoons fresh thyme, minced
  • 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 12 sweet rolls
  • 10 slices provolone cheese
  • 14 ounces sliced deli roast beef

For the Topping

  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons dried onion soup mix

For the Au Jus

  • 1 packet au jus gravy mix
  • 3 cups water

Optional Garnish

  • Fresh chopped parsley

Instructions

  1. Caramelize the Onions: In a large skillet over medium heat, melt 3 tablespoons of unsalted butter. Add the thinly sliced onion and cook, stirring occasionally, for 12 to 15 minutes until the onions are soft, browned, and caramelized but not burnt. Add minced fresh thyme, kosher salt, and black pepper; stir to combine. Remove from heat and set aside.
  2. Prepare the Rolls: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Keep the 12 sweet rolls intact as a whole package, then slice horizontally to separate tops and bottoms. Arrange the bottoms cut side up in an 11×7-inch baking dish.
  3. Assemble the Sliders: Layer the bottoms of the rolls with half of the provolone cheese slices. Add the sliced roast beef evenly over the cheese. Spread the caramelized onions on top of the beef. Add the remaining provolone slices, then place the tops of the rolls back over the layered ingredients.
  4. Prepare Onion Butter Topping: In a small bowl, combine the melted 1/2 cup unsalted butter and 1 1/2 tablespoons dried onion soup mix. Brush or pour this butter mixture evenly over the tops of the rolls, ensuring full coverage.
  5. Bake the Sliders: Loosely cover the baking dish with foil, making sure it does not touch the rolls. Bake for 25 minutes at 350°F. Remove the foil and bake uncovered for an additional 5 minutes to allow the tops to brown slightly.
  6. Make the Au Jus: While the sliders bake, prepare the au jus gravy according to package instructions by mixing one packet of au jus gravy mix with 3 cups of water. Heat and stir until fully combined and warm.
  7. Serve: Serve the sliders warm, optionally garnished with fresh chopped parsley. Accompany with small bowls of au jus for dipping to enhance the flavor experience.

Notes

  • Dried herbs can be substituted for fresh thyme, using half the amount called for.
  • Sweet rolls are preferred for their softness and slight sweetness, but any slider buns can be used.
  • Provolone and mozzarella are recommended cheeses, but feel free to use your favorite melty cheese.
  • The au jus dipping sauce is optional but adds significant depth of flavor to the sliders.
  • These sliders freeze well; wrap tightly and freeze for up to 1 month. Thaw and reheat before serving.
