For the Fry Bread:
2 cups all-purpose flour
1 tbsp baking powder
1/2 tsp salt
3/4 cup warm water (plus more if needed)
Oil or lard for frying
For the Toppings:
1 lb cooked seasoned ground beef or 2 cups seasoned beans (black or pinto)
1 cup shredded lettuce
1 cup diced tomatoes
1 cup shredded cheddar or Monterey Jack cheese
1/2 cup diced onions or scallions
1/2 cup sour cream or plain yogurt
Salsa or hot sauce, to taste
Optional: sliced avocado, chopped cilantro, jalapeños
Instructions
- In a large bowl, mix flour, baking powder, and salt. Gradually stir in warm water until a soft, slightly sticky dough forms.
- Cover dough with a damp cloth and let rest for 15–20 minutes.
- Divide dough into 6–8 equal pieces. Flatten each into a round disc about 1/2 inch thick.
- Heat about 1 inch of oil in a skillet or pot to 350°F (175°C).
- Fry each dough disc for 1–2 minutes per side until puffed and golden brown. Drain on paper towels or a rack.

- Finish with sour cream or yogurt, salsa, and any optional garnishes. Serve immediately.
Notes
Swap meat for seasoned turkey, shredded chicken, or plant-based alternatives.
Use black or pinto beans for a vegetarian option.
Try toppings like pickled jalapeños, radish, or cotija cheese for extra flair.
Drizzle with avocado crema or chipotle mayo for a twist.
Make mini versions for party appetizers or bites.
