Description
This homemade electrolyte drink is a refreshing and natural way to replenish your body’s essential minerals without the added sugars, dyes, or artificial ingredients found in commercial sports drinks. Made with fresh citrus juices, ginger, sea salt, baking soda, and a touch of natural sweetener, it offers a balanced mix of electrolytes to keep you hydrated and energized.
Ingredients
Liquid Base
- 4 cups of water (960 ml)
Flavors and Electrolytes
- 1-2 inch chunk ginger, smashed and roughly chopped
- ¼ tsp baking soda
- ¼ tsp sea salt
- ½ cup fresh orange juice (120 ml)
- ¼ cup fresh lemon juice (60 ml)
- 2 tbsp fresh lime juice (30 ml)
- 2-3 tbsp pure maple syrup or honey (see notes for alternatives)
Instructions
- Simmer Ginger: Add water and the smashed, roughly chopped ginger to a medium-sized saucepan. Place it over medium heat and bring it to a simmer. Cover the pot and let it simmer for about 10 minutes to infuse the ginger flavor.
- Add Baking Soda and Salt: Remove the pot from heat. Add the baking soda and sea salt to the pot and stir until both have fully dissolved. Be cautious as the mixture will foam up briefly after adding baking soda; watch closely to prevent overflow.
- Mix in Citrus and Sweetener: Stir in the fresh orange juice, lemon juice, lime juice, and maple syrup or honey until everything is well combined and sweetened to taste.
- Strain the Drink: Place a fine mesh strainer over a large, heat-safe bowl. Pour the mixture through the strainer to remove solid ginger pieces and any citrus seeds for a smooth drink.
- Serve or Store: Serve the electrolyte drink hot immediately or allow it to cool completely before transferring to refrigerator-friendly closed containers to chill. Keep refrigerated for up to 5 days. You can also freeze portions in ice cube molds for convenient electrolyte ice cubes to add to water or other beverages for a hydration boost.
Notes
- Maple syrup or honey can be substituted with agave syrup or coconut sugar for different flavor profiles or dietary preferences.
- Adjust the sweetness to your liking by adding more or less sweetener after tasting.
- This drink serves well as a natural alternative to commercial sports drinks for post-workout hydration or general electrolyte replenishment.
- For a stronger ginger flavor, increase the amount of ginger or let it simmer for longer before adding citrus juices.
