Ingredients
Biscuits
- 10 oz buttermilk biscuits
Sausage Layer
- 1 lb breakfast sausage
Egg Mixture
- 6 large eggs
- ½ cup whole milk
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 tsp black pepper
Cheese
- 2 cups shredded cheese (divided)
Gravy
- 2 cups water
- 1 packet (2.75 oz) sausage gravy mix
Instructions
- Prepare the biscuit base: Press the buttermilk biscuit dough evenly into a greased 9×13 inch baking pan forming the base layer of the casserole.
- Cook the sausage: Brown the breakfast sausage in a skillet over medium heat until fully cooked, then drain excess grease. Layer the cooked sausage evenly over the biscuit dough in the baking pan.
- Mix and add eggs: In a bowl, whisk together the eggs, whole milk, salt, and black pepper until well combined. Pour this egg mixture evenly over the sausage layer in the pan.
- Add cheese: Sprinkle 1 cup of the shredded cheese evenly over the egg and sausage layer.
- Prepare the gravy: In a saucepan, combine the sausage gravy mix with 2 cups of water. Cook over medium heat, stirring frequently until the gravy thickens. Remove from heat and let it cool slightly.
- Layer the gravy: Pour the slightly cooled sausage gravy evenly over the cheese and egg layers in the casserole.
- Top with remaining cheese: Sprinkle the remaining 1 cup of shredded cheese over the top of the casserole.
- Bake the casserole: Place the casserole in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) and bake for 35 minutes or until the casserole is set and the cheese is melted and bubbly.
- Rest before serving: Remove from oven and let the casserole rest for 10 minutes to allow it to set fully before cutting and serving.
Notes
- Ensure the gravy is cooled slightly before pouring over the eggs to prevent cooking the eggs prematurely.
- Letting the casserole rest after baking helps it set and makes slicing easier.
- For added flavor, use spicy breakfast sausage instead of mild.
- Garnish with chopped green onions or chives for a fresh pop of color and mild onion flavor.
